Pumps in the Food and Beverage Industry

Back

March 3, 2016 By Mike Hurlbatt

Pumps are vital to the food and beverage industry. Many of the applications are for compressors, which are basically food grade pumps used to pump gases instead of liquids. Here are some of the applications for pumps functioning as compressors in the food and beverage industry.

Pumps In Food and Beverage Industry

Coffee Making Machines

A compressor is used to force hot water at a high rate of pressure through the coffee beans while the coffee is percolating. This increases the strength and flavour of coffee.

Dispensing Drinks

Compressors are used to dispense beer. The compressor is combined with a cooling system to transport beer through the lines, into your glass.

Ice Cream Dispensing

When any form of frozen yoghurt or soft serve ice cream is dispensed, it uses a compressor to move the desserts into the cups or cones.

Nitrogen Generation

A dedicated air compressor uses compressed air to produce nitrogen. Air is forced through a series of filters to remove impurities. The final filter removes oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Peristaltic Pumps in the Food and Beverage Industry

Peristaltic pumps are used for many food and beverage applications, too. They mimic the digestion system of animals and humans, using a rotor with “shoes” that compress a hose to move fluids. The fluids only touch the hose, making them great for sanitary applications.

We use Verderflex peristaltic pumps as our “go-to” brand because they are reliable. They reduce downtime and enhance productivity. The design ensures the ultimate in sanitation and hygiene, ensuring that high quality and safety are maintained.

The dairy industry uses peristaltic pumps not only to move product but for accurate metering when adding flavourings, colourings and preservatives. Breweries use them to move beer and to provide accurate dosing.

The juice industry benefits greatly from peristaltic pumps because the acids in fruit juices can cause cavitation on other designs of pumps. The acidity and viscosity of juices can be problematic for many pump designs. Peristaltic pumps are a great solution for producing fresh, perfect juice in massive quantities.
