Applications of Vacuum Pumps

Vacuum pumps are popular for a variety of uses and applications. Vacuum pumps work by removing gas from a sealed chamber. This creates a partial vacuum and fluid can rush into the space due to the chamber having less pressure than the space outside of the chamber.

Vacuum pumps are generally separated into three types:

  • Momentum Transfer Pumps: They use high speed blades to remove gas from a space.
  • Entrapment Pumps: They are usually cryopumps or ion pumps. Cryopumps “entrap” molecules by freezing them on an array. Ion pumps are more complicated; they entrap ions to help achieve ultra-high vacuum levels.
  • Positive Displacement Pumps: They create a vacuum by expanding a cavity and discharging the gas into another space, repeating the process over and over. The two most common designs are rotary vane pumps and diaphragm pumps. These two designs are by far the most common of vacuum pumps.

Applications of Vacuum Pumps

Vacuum Pumps in Industry and Science

There is a wide range of applications for vacuum pumps in both industry and science. They are used for such divergent industries and applications as fabricating cabinets, stone cutting, glass cutting, printing presses, enhancing uranium, photolithography, CRT’s, production of electric lamps and vacuum tubes, flight instruments and composite moulding.

In the medical industry, they are used for radiosurgery, radiopharmacy, radiotherapy, mass spectrometers and various instruments that analyse gas, solid, surface, liquid and biomaterials.

Some other uses: decorative vacuum coatings on plastics, metal and glass, making glass more durable and energy-efficient, hard coatings for engine components in Formula One racing, freeze drying, fusion research, vacuum engineering, sewage systems, air conditioning service, milking machines, trash compactors and vacuum impregnation of electric motor windings.
