Manufacturer Spotlight: RAN Double Diaphragm Pumps

We import water pumps from all over the world into Australia. RAN pumps are made in Istanbul, Turkey, and sold on every continent. They specialise in diaphragm pumps, and manufacture both air operated and electro-mechanical diaphragm pumps.

Diaphragm pumps are used in many industries, such as food, alcohol, wastewater, petrochemical, chemical, petrol, pulping, paper, and filter press and of course the mining industry. RAN pumps are all proprietary designs, and manufactured by the parent company, Gisan.

Diaphragm pumps work by moving a diaphragm to expand or contract the area of a chamber. Expanding the chamber lowers the pressure, allowing fluids to flow in. Contracting the chamber raises the pressure, forcing fluids to flow out. The action is similar to a cylinder in the engine of your car.

Diaphragm pumps have good suction lift capability, and can be used to pump slurries and sludges that have a high solid content. They can provide discharge pressure as high as 12 bar. Their use runs from large industrial pumps to small pumps in artificial hearts or fish tanks.

Diaphragm pumps are self-priming, and provide up to 97% efficiency. Small diaphragm pumps are even used as air compressors, due to being inexpensive, relatively quiet, and having limited moving parts within the air stream. This ensures that the air will be clean.

We carry eight different lines of RAN double diaphragm pumps: aluminium, plastic, food grade stainless steel, cast stainless steel, cast iron, PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride), also available in electric driven, and high pressure pumps.

Our plastic pumps range from the AP, which is a ¼ inch polypropylene pump, to the FP, which is a 2 inch polypropylene pump. The aluminium pumps range from the BA, which is ½ inch, to the 3 inch GA. Food grade pumps range from the ½ inch BS to the 3 inch GS. The PVDF pump from BPV, measuring in at ½ inch to the 1”DPV. Cast iron pumps range from 1” DC Series to 3” GC Series. We also have a range of cast stainless steel pumps.

Our electric-driven pumps are available in plastic, aluminium, and stainless steel, in ranges from 1 inch to 3 inch. We carry two high pressure pumps: the 2 inch FHC, and the Hydraulic Piston Pump.

A Different Kind of Pump: Plastic Pumps

Though most pumps are made of metal, plastic pumps are superior in a number of ways. Plastic pumps operate the same way as other pumps, but have the defining feature of being made of plastic and plastic-like materials. This design alone creates a number of advantages over pumps made from traditional materials.Plastic Pumps

To start with, plastic pumps are normally lower maintenance, being less susceptible to damage from various kinds of liquids and materials and invulnerable to rust. They are also usually lighter than metal pumps of the same kind and can transmit dangerous or corrosive fluids with no risk of leaking or related accidents.

Teflon is usually the specific plastic polymer of choice due to its stronger and more durable nature. This is especially true in heavier industrial settings, but other types of plastic can be used, such as PVDF, Polypropylene, ABS and Noryl. In harsher environments, plastic pumps are usually cheaper than metal ones due to the fact that specific high grade exotic metals do not need to be used where as plastic will do.

When transporting water via a pump, plastic pumps are also often a good choice. The reason for this is that they maintain the purity of the water more regularly because metal can corrode and trace elements can leak into the water supply. Plastic pumps are normally more wear resistant and therefore reduce any risk of contamination in this way. This is especially useful for the purposes of pumping necessarily pure water. Plastic pumps also make much better submersible pumps for these reasons; that they will not wear or rust in water.

While plastic pumps are better in most instances, there are a few notable disadvantages to using them. They are normaly more susceptible to damage from heat and therefore may have a lower maximum temperature limit. Certain chemicals may also react with the plastic, disallowing use of the material for a pump of that chemical. This being said, plastic pumps are better for water pumps as well as most other materials.
