Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pumps: What They Are and What They Do.

As a prolific importer of pumps into Australia, we import air operated double diaphragm (AODD) pumps for a variety of applications. We would like to tell you about how they work without bogging you down in too many technical terms and then tell you about some of the applications for AODD pumps.

How AODD Pumps Work: the Short Version

AODD pumps are positive displacement pumps that have two diaphragms which are connected by a shaft in the middle section of the pump. The center section has an air valve.

The air valve shoots compressed air into the first diaphragm, moving it towards the side of the pump. This results in what is called a “press stroke” which pushes water out of the pump. Once in motion, the water is directed by check valves that force it to move towards the discharge point.

Since the diaphragms are connected, the press stroke of one diaphragm becomes a suction stroke for the other diaphragm and the air behind the second diaphragm is pushed out of the pump. The liquid is pushed to the suction side by atmospheric pressure.

There is a suction ball valve which is moved off of its seat by this action, pushing the fluid into the liquid chamber.

When the first diaphragm reaches the end of its stroke, the air valve then directs the air towards the back of the second diaphragm. Then the process for the second diaphragm moves along the same as for the first one. The diaphragms alternate in this fashion, moving fluids efficiently.

A Different Kind of Pump: Plastic Pumps

Though most pumps are made of metal, plastic pumps are superior in a number of ways. Plastic pumps operate the same way as other pumps, but have the defining feature of being made of plastic and plastic-like materials. This design alone creates a number of advantages over pumps made from traditional materials.Plastic Pumps

To start with, plastic pumps are normally lower maintenance, being less susceptible to damage from various kinds of liquids and materials and invulnerable to rust. They are also usually lighter than metal pumps of the same kind and can transmit dangerous or corrosive fluids with no risk of leaking or related accidents.

Teflon is usually the specific plastic polymer of choice due to its stronger and more durable nature. This is especially true in heavier industrial settings, but other types of plastic can be used, such as PVDF, Polypropylene, ABS and Noryl. In harsher environments, plastic pumps are usually cheaper than metal ones due to the fact that specific high grade exotic metals do not need to be used where as plastic will do.

When transporting water via a pump, plastic pumps are also often a good choice. The reason for this is that they maintain the purity of the water more regularly because metal can corrode and trace elements can leak into the water supply. Plastic pumps are normally more wear resistant and therefore reduce any risk of contamination in this way. This is especially useful for the purposes of pumping necessarily pure water. Plastic pumps also make much better submersible pumps for these reasons; that they will not wear or rust in water.

While plastic pumps are better in most instances, there are a few notable disadvantages to using them. They are normaly more susceptible to damage from heat and therefore may have a lower maximum temperature limit. Certain chemicals may also react with the plastic, disallowing use of the material for a pump of that chemical. This being said, plastic pumps are better for water pumps as well as most other materials.

What is a Double Diaphragm Pump?

It would almost take a college level mechanical engineering course to fully explain a double diaphragm pump, but we can give you the basics. Double diaphragm pumps work by pumping fluids, solids, or any mixture thereof with two separate reciprocating diaphragms. Due to the alternating pump mechanisms of the separate diaphragms, the double diaphragm pump produces a flow that is much more even than that from single diaphragm pumps.

Double diaphragm pumps are usually air-driven, which allows them to be used in gaseous or chemical-laden environments where a spark from an engine or electric motor could cause an explosion or fire. The two diaphragms are connected to a piston and each seal off a separate displacement chamber.

When a diaphragm moves to expand the area in a chamber, it lowers the air pressure and fluids flow into it through the suction valve, which is lifted off its seat by the product flow and closes at the end of the stroke by gravity. When the diaphragm contracts the area in the chamber, it forces the fluids out the chamber through the delivery valve which is an identical ball and seat non-return valve. Double diaphragm pumps are classified as positive displacement pumps, which means the cavities expand and contract to move fluids.

Advantages of the double diaphragm pump are that they are seal-less, oil-free, have a steady flow, have good suction lift characteristics, and can handle almost any kind of material, including abrasive, as well as corrosive chemicals. This makes them very good for highly viscous liquids, sludges, and slurries. They can be used for industrial, chemical, and even hygienic applications. The fact that they are air-driven allows them to be used in environments which would contra-indicate many other types of pumps.

Double diaphragm pumps can be used in places where there isn’t enough space or accessibility for other pumps. They can also be used in places with no electrical power. Some are now being used for gas well applications. The main disadvantages are that they are not very energy efficient, and their output pulsates.
